Exploring the World of Art

Artist Enlivens the British MuseumMy paintings connect contemporary experience with the rich tradition of art through the centuries. I depict people looking at—or perhaps ignoring—works of art in a museum context. Some of the people encountered in museums are providing
security or maintenance. Some are carved of marble, cast in bronze, or painted on canvas.

For many years I have photographed in U.S. and European museums, and these photos serve as a point of departure for my paintings. As part of the process, I try to develop a deeper understanding of each artist whose work is depicted, and I also imagine stories about the modern people who appear in my art.
